After the Suez Canal project, Stanton was invited by the Ottoman Empire to serve as a pasha and engineer. He spent the next decade working on a variety of infrastructure projects in the Ottoman Empire, including railways, roads, and bridges. He also played a key role in the development of the Ottoman army.

In 1882, Stanton was recalled to England to serve as the Director-General of the Ordnance Survey. He held this position for the next 15 years, during which time he oversaw the completion of the first complete map of Great Britain.

Stanton retired from the Army in 1897, but he remained active in public life. He served as a member of Parliament and was a vocal advocate for social reform. He died in 1907 at the age of 92.
