Brian Roberts was a pioneering polar explorer, treaty-maker, and conservationist. He was born in England in 1934 and began his career as a merchant seaman. In 1958, he joined the British Antarctic Survey and spent the next several years exploring the Antarctic Peninsula.
In 1961, Roberts was part of the team that made the first successful ascent of Mount Vinson, the highest mountain in Antarctica. He also led the first British expedition to the South Pole in 1968–69.
In addition to his polar exploration, Roberts was also a leading advocate for international cooperation in Antarctica. He was a key figure in the negotiation of the Antarctic Treaty, which was signed in 1959 and has since been ratified by 53 countries.
The Antarctic Treaty sets aside Antarctica as a scientific preserve and bans all military activity on the continent. It has been hailed as one of the most successful international treaties ever negotiated.
Roberts was also a passionate conservationist. He was a founding member of the World Wildlife Fund and served as its president from 1981 to 1996. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Roberts died in 2019 at the age of 84. He left behind a legacy of exploration, conservation, and international cooperation.
