The Assassination
On the evening of April 14, 1865, Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, attended a performance of the play Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre. During the third act of the play, Booth entered the presidential box and shot Lincoln in the head. Lincoln was rushed to a nearby house, where he died the following morning.
Booth escaped from the theatre and fled to Virginia. He was pursued by Union soldiers and eventually cornered in a barn. Booth refused to surrender and was shot and killed by Union soldiers.
The Funeral
Lincoln's body lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda for three days. Thousands of people came to pay their respects, including members of Congress, foreign dignitaries, and ordinary citizens. Lincoln's funeral was held on April 19, 1865, and his body was transported to Springfield, Illinois, where he was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
