In 1889, Elisabeth married Bernhard Förster, a German anti-Semite and racist. The couple moved to Paraguay in 1893, where they founded a utopian colony called New Germany. The colony was based on the principles of Aryan supremacy and eugenics.
New Germany was a failure. The colonists were plagued by disease and conflict. In 1900, Bernhard Förster was killed by a member of the colony. Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche returned to Germany in 1901.
After her return to Germany, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche continued to promote the Nazi ideology. She edited her brother's writings and used them to support her own racist and anti-Semitic views.
Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche was a complex and contradictory figure. She was a devoted sister to Friedrich Nietzsche, but she also embraced the racist and anti-Semitic views that her brother had rejected. Her role in the development of the Nazi ideology is a reminder of the dangers of unchecked hatred and intolerance.
