Chapter 1: Getting Started
In this chapter, you will learn the basics of drawing, such as how to hold a pencil, how to draw basic shapes, and how to create depth and perspective.
Materials You Will Need
- A pencil
- A piece of paper
- An eraser
How to Hold a Pencil
The way you hold a pencil can affect the way you draw. There are two main ways to hold a pencil:
- The overhand grip: This is the most common way to hold a pencil. To use the overhand grip, place your thumb and index finger on the pencil, about an inch from the tip. Your other fingers should wrap around the pencil, below your thumb and index finger.
- The underhand grip: This grip is less common, but it can be more comfortable for some people. To use the underhand grip, place your thumb and index finger on the pencil, about an inch from the tip. Your other fingers should wrap around the pencil, above your thumb and index finger.
Experiment with both grips to see which one feels more comfortable for you.
How to Draw Basic Shapes
The first step to drawing is learning how to draw basic shapes. Basic shapes include circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles.
To draw a circle, start by drawing a small dot in the center of your paper. Then, move your pencil around the dot, keeping it at the same distance from the center. As you move your pencil, gradually increase the pressure you are applying to the paper. This will create a thicker line around the outside of the circle.
To draw a square, start by drawing a horizontal line across your paper. Then, draw a vertical line perpendicular to the first line. Finally, connect the ends of the two lines to create a square.
To draw a triangle, start by drawing a horizontal line across your paper. Then, draw two lines that meet at a point above the horizontal line. Finally, connect the ends of the two lines to the ends of the horizontal line to create a triangle.
To draw a rectangle, start by drawing two parallel lines across your paper. Then, draw two more parallel lines perpendicular to the first two lines. Finally, connect the ends of the four lines to create a rectangle.
How to Create Depth and Perspective
Depth and perspective are two important elements of drawing. Depth refers to the illusion of three-dimensionality in a drawing. Perspective refers to the way objects appear to get smaller as they recede into the distance.
There are a number of techniques that you can use to create depth and perspective in your drawings. One of the most effective techniques is to use
