Sudan's Nuba Mountains People Under Siege is a powerful and moving account of this ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis. Written by Eric Reeves, a leading expert on Sudan, this book tells the stories of the Nuba people, who have endured unimaginable suffering with resilience and dignity.
Reeves draws on his extensive research and firsthand reporting to provide a comprehensive overview of the conflict in the Nuba Mountains. He traces its origins to the Sudanese government's long-standing policy of Arabization and Islamization, which has marginalized the Nuba and other non-Arab groups in Sudan.
Reeves also documents the Sudanese government's use of scorched-earth tactics against the Nuba, including the bombing of civilian targets, the destruction of crops and livestock, and the use of chemical weapons. He describes the horrific human toll of this violence, including the deaths of countless innocent civilians, the displacement of millions of people, and the widespread malnutrition and disease.
Despite the overwhelming odds, the Nuba people have refused to give up. They have organized a resistance movement that has fought bravely against the Sudanese government, and they have established a functioning civil society that provides essential services to the population.
Reeves' book is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Nuba people. It is also a call to action for the international community to do more to stop the genocide in the Nuba Mountains.
