About the Author
Jefferson Davis was born in Kentucky in 1808. He graduated from West Point and served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. After the war, he entered politics and served in the U.S. Senate from 1847 to 1851. In 1861, he was elected President of the Confederate States of America. He served in this position until the Confederacy was defeated in 1865.
After the war, Davis was captured and imprisoned for two years. He was eventually pardoned by President Andrew Johnson. He spent the rest of his life writing and lecturing about the Confederacy.
Jefferson Davis died in New Orleans in 1889.
