Early Life and Influences

Ernst Kantorowicz was born on February 3, 1895, in Posen, Germany (now Poznań, Poland). His father, Hermann, was a prominent lawyer, and his mother, Martha, was a gifted amateur artist. From an early age, Kantorowicz displayed an insatiable curiosity and a precocious intellect. He received his early education at the prestigious Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Posen, where he excelled in his studies and developed a passion for literature and history.

Intellectual Journey at Heidelberg

In 1914, Kantorowicz enrolled at the University of Heidelberg, where he studied law and history. The university at that time was a hub of intellectual ferment, and Kantorowicz immersed himself in the stimulating academic atmosphere. He attended lectures by renowned scholars such as Karl Jaspers, Max Weber, and Heinrich Rickert, whose ideas greatly influenced his intellectual development.

Wartime Interruptus: Military Conscription

Kantorowicz's academic pursuits were interrupted by the outbreak of World War I in 1914. He was conscripted into the German army and served on the Eastern Front. Despite the horrors of war, Kantorowicz remained intellectually engaged, reading voraciously during his spare time. He also began to write, drafting articles and reviews that laid the groundwork for his later scholarship.

Postwar Study and Doctoral Dissertation

After the war, Kantorowicz resumed his studies at Heidelberg and completed his doctoral dissertation in 1921. Entitled "Kaiser Friedrich II," his dissertation was a groundbreaking exploration of the life and reign of the 13th-century Holy Roman Emperor. The work showcased Kantorowicz's meticulous research, keen analytical skills, and innovative approach to medieval historiography.

Early Academic Career in Germany

With his doctorate in hand, Kantorowicz embarked on an academic career in Germany. He taught at the universities of Hamburg, Freiburg, Frankfurt, and Berlin, where he gained a reputation as a brilliant lecturer and a rising star in the field of medieval history. In 1931, he published his seminal work, "The King's Two Bodies: A Study in Medieval Political Theology," which revolutionized our understanding of the symbolic and political implications of the medieval monarchy.

Forced Emigration and Life in England

Kantorowicz's academic career in Germany was cut short by the rise of the Nazi regime. As a Jew, he was dismissed from his teaching position in 1933 and forced to emigrate. He found refuge in England, where he continued his research and writing. In 1939, he became a naturalized British citizen.

Continued Scholarship in the United States

In 1940, Kantorowicz accepted a teaching position at the University of California, Berkeley. He spent the rest of his career at Berkeley, where he became a beloved professor and a respected authority on medieval history. In 1957, he published his magnum opus, "The Two Bodies of the King: A Study in Medieval Political Theology," an expanded and revised version of his earlier work. This monumental study cemented his reputation as one of the most influential medieval historians of the 20th century.

Legacy and Impact

Ernst Kantorowicz died on September 9, 1963, at the age of 68. He left behind a legacy of groundbreaking scholarship that continues to inspire and inform generations of historians. His pioneering work on medieval political thought, symbolism, and the nature of power transformed our understanding of the Middle Ages and its enduring influence on Western civilization.
